The Governor of the state of Para, Ana Julia, inaugurated the first day of discussions for the meeting promoted by Prince Charles at his residence, Clarence House in London. The socialist party member called the attention of a very select audience of businessmen, diplomats and civil society representors with a message asking for international cooperation to develop the region: "At the time of our fathers it was too early, at the time of our children it will be too late". This was the slogan chosen by the Governor to attract investments and payments for services in their state. In the same line were the governors of Assam, Waldez Góes, and Roraima, Anchieta. This last participant, however, has surprised the public because he forgot to mention the creation of an indigenous people owned state. Investment pledges were also made by the governments of Acre and Amazonas, present at the meeting with large delegations of politicians.

The British guests of the Prince showed some skepticism about the investment opportunities made, asking for clear objectives and questioning the lack of land legal security and society support. But they did not stop praising the creativity and commitment of social and environmental entities. The participants have already agreed to pursue the discussion in the coming months in Brazil, in a second stage.

The ex- Governor of Acre Jorge Viana praised the initiative of the British MPs Barry Gardiner which promoted the product purchaser accountability, from a social and environmental point of view. “You must help us to promote responsible companies”, he argued.

The director of Friends of the Earth - Brazilian Amazon, Roberto Smeraldi, drafted the infrastructure needs for sustainable development, alternatively to the large projects made for the public outside the region: sanitation, electricity generation decentralization, communication, development of scientist and technologist presence in the region and structures for travel and tourism. The communication problem has also been highlighted by the deputy Paulo Bornhausen (DEM-SC), by the senator Artur Virgilio (PSDB-AM) and Rodrigo Baggio, from the NGO CDI, which is specialized in digital inclusion. The executive secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Márcio Zimmermann, already presented a vision less officially refined with priority placed on sustainability, focusing only on the need for the Brazilian bid, before 2010, three mega-hydroelectric projects. In addition to the complex of Rio Wood, the Belo Monte and Sao Luis do Tapajos plants. "We are going to do it in a manner different from the past, without impacts," he exclaimed.

The low involvement by the Federal Government has been questioned by several participants, despite the unofficial nature of the invitation by the prince for the government’s involvement, as he himself admitted. The Brazilian ambassador of the United Kingdom and the British ambassador of Brazil were heavily involved in the meeting, but without speaking up on the possibility that the prince could invest in Brazilian environmental forest services.
