Amazon Working Group (GTA)
Amazon Working Group (GTA) Founded in 1992, the Amazon Working Group (GTA) has 430 affiliates and is structured in the eight states that form the Legal Amazon (with the exception of Mato Grosso). It is divided up into 14 regional groups and is comprised of NGO's and social movements representing rubber tappers, Brazil nut pickers, coconut-breaking women, artisan fishermen, riverbank dwellers and indigenous communities, as well as small farmers and their families. The GTA network permits the integration of varying types of NGO's and a multiplicity of alternative experiments in forest use. The network is organised at the regional level, similar to the governmental regions, facilitating monitoring of both policy discussion and the generation and approval of socio-environmental policies by the respective State, Municipal and Federal governments. The regional structures function as forums linked to the NGO's that carry out common activities in a given geographical area.An excellent site, well organised, with information on the Amazon (physical, geographical, socio-economic and environmental data); about GTA (organisational structure, resolutions from the Third National Assembly, links with partners, list of NGO's in the GTA network); explanatory text on the 14 regional offices, names of projects and addresses for contacting; environmental impacts (explanatory text on the situation in the region, areas of occupation and conservation, conservation units, indigenous areas, and timber exploitation and mineral panning; public policy (explanatory texts on Agenda 21, Agenda 21 for the Amazon, and regional public policy - covering PPG7, sustainable development and credit).
