CUNPIR is a non-for-profit indigenous organisation created in 1994, headquartered in Porto Velho, Rondonia. It represents 42 indigenous peoples, 36 groups are located in Rondonia and the remainder in southern Amazonas and northwest Mato Grosso. The organisation networks, promotes and co-ordinates the unified resistance of indigenous peoples and organisations in the conquest of their rights. It supports indigenous leaders in the construction of their autonomy; fights for the demarcation of indigenous territories and for guarantees of their inviolability, according to the interests and needs of each people; encourages the preservation of traditions and culture; provides incentives for traditional economies and economic alternatives, in a manner which is environmentally sustainable; and seeks to network with indigenous communities and organisations nation-wide and internationally. It is a board member of the Co-ordination of Indigenous Communities of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), the Council for Networking of the Indigenous Peoples and Organisations of Brazil (CAPOIB), the Inter-institutional Inspection Committee and Deliberative Council of PLANAFLORO, the Deliberative Council of the Program of Support for Community Initiatives (PAIC), the State Health Council of Rondonia (CES), the Nucleus of Indigenous Education of Rondonia (NEIRO) and the Forum of NGO's that are Active in Rondonia. CUNPIR is also allied to other peoples of the forest, such as the rubber tappers, represented by the Rubber Tappers' Organisation of Rondonia (OSR).
